Why does Creative Commons push attribution-only licenses?
Currently, I have a simple copyright at the bottom of my website. I want to replace that with something like a Creative Commons license.
So, I went over to the Creative Commons site. They have a simple "Choose A License" page that asks you a few questions and gives you a license. Cool. But, here's the problem. None of the questions say anything about attribution. But no matter how you choose the questions, you end up with nothing but various attribution license options.
So, I moved on to the actual list of licenses. Every license starts with the word "Attribution". So, I guess CC is an attribution-only group of licenses. That's too bad. I guess CC isn't as cool as I thought it was.
I don't have a problem with people using attribution licenses. It's their work, and they can license it however they want. But for my works, I don't want an attribution requirement. This is one of the core concepts of the GPL. You cannot put additional stipulations on GPL software, such as attribution, without violating the GPL.
I'm not on a crusade to get CC to drop attribution licenses. I just wish they also offered a non-attribution alternative. There are plenty of issues with attribution, but for me it's simple matter of "I don't want attribution". I don't feel the social need to be given credit for every thing I write. I want my content to be free to be used. If someone wants to copy and paste it to a wiki, I want them to be able to do so. And attribution can be a nightmare for collections of works, such as the ever growing attribution demands on BSD. Imagine something like BSD in 100 years trying to keep due diligence on attribution.
But I also don't want to give up copyright by dumping it into the public domain. I'd like to have a simple requirement that if someone does use my content for some purpose, that it must also be free (as in freedom), just like the GPL does for software. And I want no other requirements.
I'm considering the GNU Free Documentation License. But not all my content is documentation, so I'm not sure if it fits. Searches I've made for alternatives haven't been very fruitful. Maybe I need to write my own content license. IANAL.
Anyone have any advice for content license that fits my purposes?
